What’s Good in your Hood Video Series

‘What’s Good in your Hood’ is a Bring it On initiative designed for our students to share knowledge and highlight good things that are happening in their neighbourhoods with the hope to inspire them to get involved with projects that can help others.

Essentially, we want to know ‘What’s good in your Hood’ – captured and illustrated through video. Each video submission earns BIOD Teams 10 points to their overall dance score.

WATCH and Find Out How this started in St Luke’s Catholic College.

Meet Mrs Wong, English Teacher at our school who specialises in Literacy Development and will be answering our questions.

Q1: How would you Describe what a Street Library is?

Street Library is a Pop Up Public Library that can be featured in Shopping Centres, Outside people’s homes and outside of schools.

It’s a Space where people can borrow books for FREE – They Can Take a Book, Give a Book and Share a Book at any time.

Q2: How did our School Community establish our own ‘Street Library’?

When I first started at this school 2 years ago, I noticed how huge this actual school community is. So, Mrs Wong thought this would be the perfect place to put the Street Library here because of a lot of traffic where families, grandparents and kids can borrow a book very easily.

Q3: What are the Benefits of this Community Initiative?

Street Library has been used daily and I noticed a lot of movement with the books. You can see a lot of kids’ books which show that families are returning a book and borrowing a book. It’s not only good for the young ones, it’s good for literacy, some families don’t have time to go to a library, so they pick up some books on drop offs and pick up, and lastly it’s bringing that Joy, and that wonder and imagination that books have and hopefully if they are reading, improve their literacy skills.

Q4: How can we find out more about this initiative?

It’s a great way to encourage more people to have one outside their house and it is just wonderful to have a look at what a Street Library has to offer
